Hey Everybody,
I just talked with April and told her that I wanted to do this "News &
Views" thing. She thought it was a good idea. It's a way for me to update
everyone and let you know just what I've been up to and to let you know
where I might be around country. If I am ever close to any of you doing a
celebrity golf tournament or an appearance, I hope you will come by and say
Hi!
As you may know, I have been involved with The USO since 1966 when I spent 4
months in Viet Nam entertaining our troops. At that time, I was the drummer
with Johnny Rivers and we went over with Ann-Margret. It was a trip that I
would never forget. I saw just about every inch of Southeast Asia. I was
in Chu Lai and Phu Bai up by the DMZ. We spent the better part of a month
with the Marines in DaNang, We hit all of the hot spots, Pleiku, Na Trang,
Bien Hoa, Soc Trang, down in the Mekong Delta and of course, Saigon.
Well, June 12th, my Mom and I boarded a train for San Diego. The USO in San
Diego wanted to give me an award. I told them that I did not want an award.
I do what I do for the USO because it needs to be done. On average of once
a month, I go to North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego. There I board
a COD, (that's an airplane stationed aboard a carrier) and fly out, spend a
couple of days on the ship, do a USO show and come home. Can you believe
it, they wanted to give me an award for doing that. When I told them I did
not want an award, they asked if I would come to their big dinner of the
year and perform. I said, "absolutely!"
...........

June 14th I went to Dallas and did an infomercial for a company called Programmers Clearing House. They provide all of the programming for personal satellite dishes. They are now moving into the small 18" digital dish, DSS. That was a great trip. I was able to play some golf with a couple of friends there. We played TPC Las Colinas. Dr. Michael Whetstone, one of the foremost plastic surgeons in the county is a close friend and a great golfer. I don't go to Texas without us getting to tee it up. Thanks Doc!
The weekend of June 19, 20, I went to Wichita, Kansas for The Charlie Daniels Celebrity Golf Tournament. I hosted the first Charlie Daniels Celebrity Motorcycle Poker Run. It was great and it will only get bigger next year. On Sunday afternoon we do the annual Celebrity Shoot0out. I have actually won this event in the past but this year, my team got eliminated after the first hole. So much for the shoot-out. However, my team won the actual golf tournament on Monday. I was shocked. My team consisted of Art Bryan, his son, Chad Bryan, who can really play the game, Harold Ketcherside and Robert Donovan, who, obviously, is not spending much me in the office because he is like a pro golfer. I told Robert that if he would grow a pony tail, I would take him on the road. We could make a lot of money. As the winners of the tournament, we won beautiful KFDI golf bags. KFDI is the country music station that sponsors the event and I won a beautiful, black Alvarez acoustic guitar, inscribed with the Charlie Daniels logo on the pick guard. I was the happiest guy in town. The charity is for Starkeys. Starkeys is a facility for the handicapped and disabled. We hold a Sunday Worship Service and it broadcast on KFDI. This year included, Mark Gray, Tommy Cash, Carl Jackson, Noah Gordon, Marilyn Sellars, the Sisters Wade, the one and only Bonnie Bramlett and closing off with Charlie Daniels. It is a Sunday to remember.
The last weekend of the month was spent up in Seattle with Richard Karn for his celebrity golf tournament. ESPN shot the tournament for broadcast at Thanksgiving, I think.
Well, that's about it for now. I'll keep you posted on what's coming up. Looking forward to spending a little time at home with the family. Hope you all have a great 4th of July. Stay safe and we'll do this again soon. April will let everyone when we will be doing the next chat thing. I really enjoy doing that so hopefully, that will be soon. Till then, all the best and God Bless!
Mickey
